Background
Founded in 1926, the Society of State Directors of Health, Physical Education and Recreation is a national organization comprised of individuals employed in state and territorial departments of education who have program responsibilities in school health education, physical education, and related areas.
The Society provides professional development and leadership programs to develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills of state health and state education agency staff to build the capacity within their states to promote CSHP. The Society utilizes strategic partnerships with other national organizations to further enhance the ability of state education agency staff to collaborate with other key partners to support well-developed and effective school-based programs that promote the health of youth.
From the early 1990s through 2006, the Society published a Directory of Coordinated School Health Program Staff in partnership with the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO). As printing costs became prohibitive, there was no efficient way to make edits to the directory in a timely manner. Through funding that the Society receives from CDC/DASH, we are pleased to be able to offer an online, searchable database of staff in state education and health agencies, local education agencies, territorial, tribal programs and non-governmental organizations.
Participation in the Directory is voluntary. Each agency is responsible for adding and updating its own contact information through a designee at that agency. The amount of contact information provided is up to the discretion of each agency.
The Directory of Coordinated School Health Program Staff is a critical communication tool and is the only comprehensive listing of its kind. We hope you find it to be an important and useful resource.
